Christmas, New Year's, Pigs and Sleazy News Dumps

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas! I had a wonderful holiday in Portland with my fiance's family. We went to see the Sherlock Holmes movie, and I LOVED it. It was fun. Pure fun. Which is rare these days with a Hollywood effort, so it was very much appreciated.

Not a lot to write about tonight. There are the usual suspects perpetrating the usual offenses, but I am not going to waste a lot of time commenting on them right now. It has been a very good week to just relax - though it was nice of the Obama administration to leak some unpleasant news on Christmas Eve (most transparent administration EVER!!) as well as the Christmas Eve news that Fannie and Freddie will give their execs huge bonuses... I wonder if SEIU and ACORN will send busloads of protesters to those exec homes as they did with the AIG execs. No. Of course they won't. I wonder if the Pay Czar will regulate the Fannie/Freddie bonuses and pay. No. Of course he won't. I wonder if Obama will feign outrage at the "outlandish" bonuses paid to Fannie/Freddie execs in light of them receiving so much taxpayer money the way he did with the Wall Street execs. No. Of course he won't. Silly me for asking such questions! Someone, quick, report me to the project!

Oh, also check out my sister's new blog, Fetching a Pig! (It's an Amish saying) She has some very close friends who are Amish, and she has spent time in their community. She is the sweetest person I know and does all sorts of sweet things like bake and cook and research natural remedies for illnesses. She is way sweeter than I could ever be... It's good to have someone so sweet in the family though. :) I'm really impressed with it, so take a look, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I am enjoying it!

I'll be back with all sorts of rabble-rousing and events and ways to fight in the next few days. In the meantime, I'd like to say: Never give up. I say this all the time, but I really mean it. Never, ever, ever, ever, give up. Think about how disheartened oppressed people have been throughout history - but they never gave up. I don't care how cynical or depressing things seem to get, you must never, ever give it up. Do whatever you need to do to refresh and renew your strength. We are in this fight together, and every day I feel stronger because of each and every one of you.

Happy New Year to you all.

Call NOW!

The senate lines are open my friends! I know it's close to Christmas, but think about it this way - if our troops work through Christmas, then so must we!

We've been given a gift of sorts. Dirty Harry has inserted a provision in the senate health care bill that locks into place the rationing boards (i.e. death panels - you know, that big "lie") and prevents future senates from being able to amend or repeal it without a three-fifths majority.

Jim DeMint challenged them on this and the parliamentarian allowed it to go through, and unfortunately, though it is sleazy and horrific, it may be just inside the cusp of the rules. BUT. This is where we can use it. Call all those supposedly conservative and moderate Democrats and tell them, to retain the honor and purpose of the United States Senate, that they must say they will not vote for this bill if that provision is maintained.

Yes, the senate is allowed to make its own rules, but one senate should never be able to be more powerful than a subsequent senate! Tell them to imagine what will happen when the GOP gets the power back, which is more than likely in 2010, tell them to imagine how the GOP will use this provision to forever hamstring any future Democrat-controlled senates.

For more information on this go here, here, and here.

Never Surrender - Reignite Your Fire - Video

I took the weekend to sulk around and yell at the TV and the radio, but folks, this is too important to get caught up in our disappointment and our emotions. We need each other, and we all need to keep the pressure on. Most likely we won't make the difference in the Senate vote - BUT - if we let up the pressure, it sends them a message that, with enough losses, our will to fight dwindles. It will tell them that we can be defeated by just dragging this out and chipping away at our spirits. DO NOT LET THEM. Keep calling and faxing, please. I know it's the holidays and some people have said it's over, let's put it away until after the holidays, but as someone commented over at Ace of Spades, "...our troops won't be home for Christmas Eve either." So if our troops have to fight through Christmas, then we must fight through Christmas.

Watch the following video as it will reinspire you to keep going. It's very short, but I got goosebumps after I watched it and almost cried a little. It's really powerful.

For continuous updates about Tea Party Patriots and some steps you can still take (remember, you are now doing these things to send a message - that we will never stop, even if we lose battles here and there, we are in it to win the war!) go to Tea Party WA and Tea Party Patriots.

Also, click here for an account of our very own Sally almost getting arrested in Lieberman's office because his staffer called a half dozen, armed cops to come and arrest three well-mannered citizens who wanted to speak to the senator. Video below.

Great Explanation

I love it when I find really eloquent and simple explanations for complicated ideas. The following is from a Heritage Foundation article about the unconstitutionality of the individual mandate. There are many great quotes to be found in the article, but this one stuck out for me.
The purpose of this compulsory contract, coupled with the arbitrary price ratios and controls, is to require many people to buy artificially high-priced policies to subsidize coverage for others as well as an industry saddled with other government costs and regulations.

Boom. That's it. So simple. The individual mandate forces you to buy a health insurance policy at a higher price than it would be normally so that people who are uninsured can have subsidized or free insurance. Feel better?

In other news about responsible people being punished for the sake of the irresponsible, I just met a woman today who owns a house in Florida, but rents a small apartment here in Seattle. She and her husband have been trying to sell the Florida house for ages, but of course are having a tough time. They are able to make the payments right now, but it's really hard on their family. She told me that the only way the bank will renegotiate her loan is if she stops paying her mortgage. Yup. She and her husband are doing the right thing by paying the monthly mortgage, but the rewards go to the people who shirk their responsibilities.

Another plan of action!!!

The first one you can find here.

This one comes from Take Back Medicine.

Our latest intelligence is that Reid plans to call for a vote at 8 p.m. Christmas Eve.

Here's the schedule as reported by Politico:

"The majority leader (Reid) must begin the procedural steps necessary to finish the bill by Christmas Eve. The current timeline would have the Senate taking a series of votes: at 1 a.m. Monday, 7 a.m. Tuesday, 1 p.m. Wednesday and 7 p.m. Christmas Eve."

There are still some holdouts. Backroom deals, blandishments, and arm-twisting are in high gear.

Constituents can't get appointments, and voice mail is full.

Some Republicans are using every parliamentary rule still available, such as forcing the clerk to read the bill aloud.

The fix is supposed to be in. But faxes are possibly still getting through.

Here is the message we are faxing to Senators-and to Representatives-since if the Senate bill passes, Pelosi may bring it up for immediate vote in the House without having a conference committee.

Here is what you can do:

Fax the letter to your Senator and Representative, with a brief cover letter on your stationery.

  • To Republicans, ask them to hold firm and to thank Sen. Coburn and Sen. DeMint for forcing a reading of the bill.
  • To Democrats, ask them to vote NO for cloture and NO on the bill if it comes to a vote. And ask them to urge Sen. Reid to withdraw this very bad bill.
  • If desired, add a note on what you think is the worst provision.
  • Also fax or email the letter to talk show hosts, reporters, and editors, with a personal note.

We must not give up!

Some "holdouts" are being targeted for special attention, but there may be some wild cards we don't know about-who care about the future of our country, as well as their own.

For Senate and House FAX numbers, go to: and click on your state.

A Brilliant Idea

A scheme to sink the health care deform bill, via a very smart friend of mine:

Obama's health care bill is at the crossroads. We need one Senator
to take a stand against the bill--not one or a few of its provisions,
but the bill in its entirety. But the wavering Democrats are probably
worried that they will be targeted for defeat, by the left-wing, if
they come out against the bill.

Robert Tracinski has come up with a novel approach to
strengthening their backbone: promising support to the *first*
Democratic Senator to come out unequivocably against the bill as a

"Those of us who oppose the bill have tried threatening Democratic
senators with a negative incentive: the withdrawal of our votes and
our active support for their opponents. How about enticing them
with a positive incentive? Let's pledge to give our support to the re-
election campaign of the first Democratic senator to come out
against the health-care bill. If enough of us make that pledge, it
would counteract the political threat from the far left.

"The deal is this: come out against the health-care bill, and we will
pledge to donate time or money to your next re-election campaign,
and those of us who live in your state will give you our votes. We
will do it because of your stand on this one bill, regardless of any
disagreement we may have with your other policies.

"But here's the catch: we'll only do it for the *first* Democratic
senator to declare clear and unequivocal opposition to the whole

You can pledge time and/or money. Mr. Tracinski has drafted an
email to send to the wavering four Senators. My shortened version
of it is below. (In my case, I chose to pledge $500; alternatively
you can pledge time.)

His letter is below. If you think this is a good idea, PLEASE do it quickly. We have no time to waste. Feel free to use this letter as your template.

Dear Senator ,

You may be reluctant to be the first Senate Democrat to go on
record opposing the health care bill, worrying that Democrats on
the left will target you for defeat in the next election.

To counteract that, I pledge that I will contribute $500 in your next
election--IF you become the first Democratic senator to declare
unequivocal opposition to the whole health care bill (not just some
of its provisions).

So that you know this pledge of $500 support is serious, I give you
my contact information below and encourage you to remind me
when the time comes to make good on my pledge. Again, this is
conditional upon your being the first Democratic senator to declare
he will vote against the whole bill.

Send it to these four senators:

Senator Ben Nelson (NE)
Chief of Staff: Tim Becker (
Washington, DC (202) 224-6551 / (202) 228-0012 fax

Senator Blanche Lincoln (AR)
Chief of Staff: Elizabeth Burks
Washington, DC (202) 224-4843 / (202) 228-1371 fax

Senator Mary Landrieu (LA)
Chief of Staff: Jane Campbell (
Washington, DC (202) 224-5824 / (202) 224-9735 fax

Senator Mark Warner (VA)
Chief of Staff: Luke Albee (
Washington, DC (202) 224-2023 / (202) 224-6295 fax

Lastly, from the originator of this plan:

Senator Nelson seems to be the best single target, if you want to do
only one. My emails to the address above "bounced" back to me.
But I was able to copy and paste the same message at a facility on
his site:

We are days away from a historic decision on a law which directly
affects how long and healthily you will live. If this bill passes, it
will be next to impossible to repeal it. Any means of supporting a
Senator who will stand up for the rights of all of us--most especially
the rights of doctors--is worth a try.

Ben Nelson rejects abortion amendment, and sign Jim DeMint's petition!

A lot of great stuff over at Hot Air today, including the breaking news that Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson has rejected the abortion compromise and is still not ready to vote for the health care deform bill! Call or fax his offices and say thank you!! Make sure to tell him that we won't forget his courage under this particularly ferocious fire.

Also, yesterday Allahpundit (at Hot Air - okay, I love those guys) had a really great idea: call the super lefty senators like Bernie Sanders and beg them to not vote for the bill unless there is a public option and funding for abortion...

A small suggestion for those who’ve been calling Blue Dogs like Nelson to urge them to oppose: Start calling liberals like Sanders and telling them that America deserves a strong, vibrant, robust public option. Stand strong, socialists!

Make the radicals dig their heels in while simultaneously encouraging the conservatives and moderates to do the same and wah-lah, gridlock. And yes I am suggesting gridlock to stop this bill, and there is nothing nasty or underhanded about it. Our founding fathers deliberately set up the system so that we would be able to stop radical agendas that are out of line with the nature of this country and its people. Gridlock by design. It is a beautiful, beautiful thing, and a strategy that the Democrats were proud to use in 2005 and 2006.

Jim DeMint started a petition to Read Every Page of the health care bill and is asking for Americans to sign it, thereby showing that we support the Republican effort to read every page of every amendment and of the entire bill. This way the American people and the senators themselves may know what is in this bill. Pass this on and post it everywhere!

Updated with Bernie Sanders' contact information. Let's call it Operation Gridlock, though not to their faces, of course.

Action Alert Update from Tea Party Patriots: Please Read

Dear Fellow Tea Party Patriots,

YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME!!! You received the alert below and took action. You have completely overwhelmed the Senate switchboard. I have received emails stating that calls to some of the Senators below were being re-directed to Sen. Reid's office and other Senators in the Democratic leadership. I have had reports that the voice mail boxes are full. Some of you have stated that you received messages stating the calls could not go through. Some have received a message asking you to put in the mailbox number or phone number. (If you receive this message, simply put in the phone number with area code that you just dialed) The phone numbers we sent out were taken directly from the Senators web sites.

Keep up the great work! You are making a difference in this battle! I have included the phone numbers of the Senators district offices below. Please call them as well... Let's go get 'em !!!

We are at a critical point in our fight against government run healthcare.

We need to have the same urgency and intensity level that we displayed at the Congressional Town Hall Meetings during the August recess. We must not diminish our fight to defeat the Senate healthcare bill. Many "Blue Dog" Democrats and some GOP Senators have stated that they don't see the same intensity level opposing the Senate Healthcare bill that we displayed opposing the House version. They are beginning to believe that we do not strongly oppose the Senate Healthcare bill. We need to let them know that is not true.

President Obama and the Senate Democratic leadership are pulling out all the stops to pass this Senate Healthcare bill. They are putting enormous pressure on the "Blue Dog" Democrat Senators to pass the bill.

We urgently need you to make phones today and tomorrow to the Senators listed below. Please call their District Office and their D.C. office. Also, please continue to contact your Senator. Forward this to your email lists and ask them to make phone calls.

The latest Rasmussen Poll showed that 60% oppose this healthcare bill.

Keep the heat on!! Don't give up!!

Call! Call! Fax! Fax! Right now the senate is reading aloud a single payer amendment, thanks to Senator Coburn from Oklahoma. They are reading the whole 767 page bill so that the American people can actually hear what most of the Democrat leadership really want, even if they won't admit it.

PS: In case you didn't hear about it, thousands of patriots showed up, yet again, in Washington D.C. yesterday to tell those senators what we want. They staged "government waiting rooms" and stayed in their offices until they got thrown out. Sally, my co-organizer was there. As soon as she gets some video and pictures out, I'll post 'em.

Road Trip!

Whew! Made it home. Sorry for the lack of posting and communication in general. I have been driving across the country for the last week. My little sister, a 2nd LT in the Army National Guard just finished her officer training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and I flew out last week so that we could drive her truck back to Seattle together.

Driving across this country is a fantastic reminder of why we fight. This is the most beautiful, expansive, wonderful place in the world. We met a lot of really sweet people who helped us out or just engaged in a quick conversation. When I say helped us, I mean helped us. At some point a rodent crawled into the engine and chewed up some wires so we were delayed in Arizona for a couple of days. But we were so, so, so lucky to have been only 20 miles outside of a decently-sized city when the trouble began to manifest itself. We were then directed to a little auto repair shop where the service proved to be impeccable. It also concluded with the owner/manager giving us his business card, asking us to call him when we got back to Seattle so he would know we made it safely home. Very cool.

Something else that struck me as we drove across the country was the absolute right to bear arms. I am speaking of the right to defend yourself. My sister and I were alone - two young(ish) females, traveling by ourselves, through thousands of miles of deserts, through inclement weather - and I cannot tell you how much better we both felt knowing that we were armed. One night we had to stay in a slightly sketchier place than we would have preferred, and while we both know that being armed did not guarantee our safety, it sure did give us that little bit of extra reassurance that we would at least have something with which to defend our lives. It really brought home the meaning of the 2nd Amendment. No one - get that? - NO ONE has the right to tell you that you cannot defend your life or your body from harm by any means necessary. My little sis and I talked about that and I said to her, "Now I know what he meant when he said 'From my cold, dead hands.'"

My flight from Kansas City to Fort Leonard Wood was interesting. I just so happened to go out there during that storm that passed through the entire country, lucky me. My flight took place on a tiny little planelet, and I was the only passenger on board. Creepy. I felt a little like a celebrity and a little doomed. I hate flying (love airports and traveling, hate flying) so you can imagine how much I loved being totally alone on the airplane. The flight was delayed for five hours, which was fine by me as it was freezing and dark outside, and the plane was supposed to leave at 6:50 a.m.

After the delay, they finally ushered me on board, which meant me walking across a giant snow covered lot by myself, in the wind, only to find the co-pilot/flight attendant standing in front of the propellers as a courtesy to me, the only passenger. We then proceeded to sit in the plane with the engines off, in 11 degree weather, while they continued to de-ice the plane as there was some stubborn ice on the roof of the plane. You can imagine my concern. I sat in the back of the freezing plane for an hour. Yes. One whole hour in what amounted to a really expensive refrigerator. The co-pilot ended up giving me his coat because there were no blankets or anything warm on the plane.

We finally take off, me, the pilot (whom I overheard swearing at someone about the ice on the plane...), and the co-pilot, and the flight is only about 45 minutes long. As we neared Fort Leonard Wood, we started to descend. Oh, wait, did I say descend? I meant we started to head nose-first at the ground at an alarming rate. It was almost like one of those fair rides, the pirate ship one, where the boat swings back and forth becoming perpendicular with the ground at each end... yes. I thought I was going to die. I had tears in my eyes and I started saying my prayers, asking God to watch over everyone I love as I started to hyperventilate and clutched at the arms of my seat. As I was trying to make my peace with the fact that my life was about to end, we emerged from the icy clouds and the plane leveled out, and then we landed.

Of course I made sure my sister knew about the awful plane ride. What are sisters for?

As I sat at her graduation, and looked around at all of the other officers graduating with her, and at the plain room surrounding the ceremony, I realized, again, the depth of these individuals. About half of her class will be a part of the "surge" in Afghanistan, and statistics being what they are, not all of them will come home. It is really sobering. I thought about how minimal their ceremony was compared to the pomp and circumstance surrounding a university graduation, and I got pretty disgusted. People graduating with degrees that don't mean anything, such as Feminist Ecology and Social Justice, are celebrated like heroes while the real heroes quietly come and go from little places in the middle of nowhere, like Fort Leonard Wood.

Say a prayer for all these kids who are now being ordered around by a man like Barack Obama; a man who hates being Commander in Chief and has no clue about the military, the soldiers, or how to lead them with inspiration and hope for victory.

Despite him, however, these guys and gals will do their best and you can be sure they are making us all proud.

And you want these people in charge of you private medical records?

Please. Via Hot Air:

The Transportation Security Agency has released what basically amounts to a "how-to" manual for terrorists. Way to go government!

This made me think about what might "accidentally" happen with people's medical records and other such things, when government sticks their huge mistake-prone noses into our health system.

Whatever or whoever caused this leak for TSA is a shining example of the complete ineptitude of big government.

So Obama thinks he's FDR?

Compare FDR's words (on December 8, 1941) and his espousal of the idea, of even the word, "victory," to Obama's grudging and tepid attempt at acting like the Commander in Chief. Oh and what kind of CIC leaves out the phrase "God bless our troops" in a speech about our troops fighting and dying, when the phrase was written into the speech prior to the event?

Democracy is victorious today in Honduras

A very interesting blow-by-blow of the Honduran congressional vote today to decide whether or not Zelaya could be restored to the presidency. An overwhelming majority decided to vote YES, to accept the motion to not restore Zelaya. They have upheld the decision of the supreme court and have declared that their democracy will stand true by denying Zelaya the right to return to the office of the president. This is the will of the people and the demands of their constitution.

How about an apology to Honduras Mr. Obama, you know, since you're so good at those?

The Imposter

So it turns out that someone has posted more than 800 comments on articles on the Seattle Times website. The person has been posting as "Liberty Bell" and allegedly said some nasty things. This imposter has also allegedly used direct quotes from my blog to make it seem like it is me.

It is time to clarify: that person posting on the Seattle Times website is not me. The nicknames are similar, though not even the exact spelling, and I have no rights to that nickname so I cannot prevent others from using it. I also cannot prevent anonymous people from lifting content from my own blog.

If you see comments by this imposter, please call him/her out. It is not me.

Your participation is requested...

On two items!

First, via Watts Up With That, a link to a survey about "climate change." Check it out and vote "count me out" to make it known that intelligent people don't take manipulated and fraudulent data as adequate proof of anthropogenic global warming.

Second, there's a nice article about yours truly over at the Kitsap Sun and the trolls found the article first. If you're keen, go on over and leave a comment or two... :)

Happy Monday everyone!

The after-Thanksgiving post

First of all, happy Thanksgiving to everyone! I hope you all had a relaxing and joyful weekend. I know I did - hence the lateness of my happy Thanksgiving wishes!

Second, some information about poor Americans today versus the average American in 1971. Guess what. The poor today are better off. Interesting stuff.

That's all for now!

A collection of hot-news items

I can't believe how many things happened this weekend! I'll just leave a few links for you to peruse, some of it exciting, some of it disturbing, all of it interesting.

Andrew Breitbart (my new hero) got his hands on pounds and pounds of documents that the San Diego County ACORN tried to get rid of by throwing them in a public dumpster just days before the Attorney General raided their offices. Mr. Breitbart says he will be releasing them.

Finally. Finally someone - either a whistleblower or a hacker - released emails, code, documents, etc. from the Climate Research Unit in East Anglia, a "premier" research entity on all matters of "climate change." Turns out that these researchers are liars and fakes, and really, criminals. Finally, the truth starts to come out.

It seemed like practically all of MSNBC from anchors to reporters to commentators and guests were appalled at the "whiteness" of Sarah Palin's crowds. They snarled that her crowds thus far prove that she is a magnet for "angry whites." Well, hidey-ho, take a look at the racial make-up of MSNBC and have yourself a nice laugh over their ridiculous hypocrisy.

There are just a ton of great links over at Hot Air today so here are a few to start you out, but make sure to check back there regularly.
ObamaCare losing even more numbers
Obama + Asia = Flop
(Via Hot Air) The unstated price of trying the terrorists in our court system
The real cost of the senate health care bill

Of course, most of the articles and blog posts here are wonderful. Take your time picking through them.

Deliberative Analysis, RIP

My new article on American Thinker.

New Website - No Cap and Trade!

This is an awesome site that a friend of mine just showed me. It is an anti-cap and trade (tax) website, and they are organizing a boycott of the companies that have thrown their full support behind something called, "Hopenhagen." Yes, I know, I laughed too. I do think there needs to be two entries for the word "hope" in the dictionary now. One for the real definition of hope, and one for the people who try to use that word to piggyback on to Obama's notion that he himself is hope, which means God knows what for the world.

Please spread the anti-cap and tax website around, as well as the boycott. I know you can't boycott everything on that list, but you can get quite a lot of them. For instance, I am a customer of Starbuck's. However, I do not have to be. There are plenty of other places to go to get my chai tea.

FYI, the opening message of Hopenhagen's website says something like, "On December 7, 2009, the world leaders will come together to decide the fate of our planet.."

This is too rich. So a large conference room full of people, some of whom are not really very good leaders of their own countries, think they have the power to determine the fate of an ENTIRE PLANET. Ha. Ahaha. Ahahahahahahahahhahaha.

If they succeed in their efforts to cripple mankind, technology, prosperity and a higher standard of living for all people, and they succeed in taking us back to the dark ages, so that Mother Earth may live peacefully once again, what are they going to say when a giant hurricane comes along and wipes out half the eastern seaboard after all their actions? Actually, I already know what they'll say, because it's the same sentiment that they use to explain why education is failing, and why the economy is failing, "we didn't do enough." It is the old story about a sick horse and some turpentine.

Lastly, on their mission statement page, there's this: "Hopenhagen is change – and that change will be powered by all of us." Hmmmmm... hope and change... well I guess the eco-tyrants think that if those two vague, rhetorical platitudes were enough to get the least experienced, least known candidate into the most powerful office in the world, then by golly, it just might work for them.

Patty Murray's lame video - UPDATED

Leave your comments on Patty Murray's really awful campaign video to let her know what you think. Just click the image until you arrive at the You Tube page and leave your comment there. Seriously, this is the best she can do? Could she have looked into the camera at least once?

Update: Turns out that after getting four negative comments that Patty Murray has stopped allowing people to leave comments on her boring, ineffective, and supremely amateurish campaign video. Apparently the comments must be approved by her You Tube Commissar so I doubt we'll be seeing any more critical statements. That's funny. I thought this was the most ethical, transparent, for the people, blah blah, supportive of free speech, blah blah, Congress EVER! Ha.

I'm now posting comments with the knowledge that they will be read by her staffer, asking them why they hate free speech and why she can't take a little constructive criticism from her constituents. You should try it too!

Update II: Now it seems that the comment about blocking my comments got posted... Keep trying everyone and let's see which posts get through!

Million Med March - Thank you!

Thanks to everyone that showed up in downtown Seattle today on this blustery, freezing, rainy day! We had about 75 people brave the weather to stand with the doctors of the Million Med March organization, against ReidPelosiObamaCare.

We had some really good speakers who touched on all aspects of the health care issue. It was educational, which eased some of the vicious cold!

I made a promise to someone that the next event would be outside of downtown Seattle because it is just too difficult for people to get there and find parking. I will most definitely find some new venues that are easier for all people to find so that we can all enjoy getting together.

Thanks again to all our guests and to the speakers and especially thanks to Vann Schaffner for putting this together and for bringing his family all the way from Spokane to be a part of this.

Getting vocal with your senators, right now!

Hot Air has a great piece today about the $370 billion in new taxes that the Reid bill proposes. Aside from being disgusted, one quote made me laugh out loud:
The non-indexing for inflation raises an interesting question about whether it breaks President Obama’s pledge. Was his $250K limit in real or nominal dollars? (Emphasis mine)

Why did I laugh at this? Because I don't think Barack Obama has any idea what "real" or "nominal" dollars means. And I highly doubt that when he made that ridiculuous campaign promise that he was thinking about the most simple aspects of microeconomics: real prices, nominal prices, and indexing for inflation. Too funny. Sad, but funny.

Moving on... Ed Morrissey makes a great point when he says that Reid's decision to postpone cap and trade for so long is an indication of his readiness to smash the health care bill through the Senate. And really, the Democrats are deciding, what will be more disastrous for me? Passing HellCare or not passing anything? Get on your phones/fax machines today.

Updated Link to Pelosi's Seattle Press Conference

The link to Pelosi's press conference in Seattle where she admitted that she thinks jail time for refusing to buy government approved health insurance is "fair."

Friday, November 13, 2009

Take a break from calling about health care, or combine it with your calls about health care, because it was just announced this morning that Obama's administration (if you can even call it an administration, it's more like watching a bunch of old radicals with acid-ravaged brains hanging out at a community garden) announced that they will be trying 5 of the 9/11 terrorists, including mastermind, KSM, in New York City in civilian courts. Again, treating these T-E-R-R-O-R-I-S-T-S as criminals. Way to go 'Bam. Remember when your plane buzzed over NYC and scared the living daylight out of people just so you could get a photograph? And now you are bringing the guys that caused this into the city???

How dare you? Please call Congress and tell them to fight this. Capitol switchboard: 202-224-3121.

KVI won't renew Kirby Wilbur's contract!! :( BOOOOO!!

KVI decided not to renew Kirby Wilbur's contract - after 16 years! - and TODAY was his last day on the air! Just like that they ripped him from his career and life's work. If they were going to get rid of someone, in my opinion it should have been that Peter guy in the afternoon, no offense. That guy just doesn't have what Kirby has. Kirby is brilliant, entertaining, insightful, intelligent, considerate, and just an all around really good person with a big heart.

I've already emailed KVI to ask them to reconsider. Please do the same!

Make KVI feel the heat! This was a horrible business decision on their part. Kirby was the only reason I ever listened to that station. As I said in my email to them, goodbye KVI, hello KTTH.

Tuesday, November 10, 2009

I just wanted to congratulate everyone who showed up on THREE HOURS notice to Swedish Medical Center yesterday to protest Nancy Pelosi and her health care DEform bill. I wasn't able to make it, but apparently there were about 50 people there, two of whom tried to gain entrance into the private meeting that had been billed as a public "press conference."

They were thrown out, and as one of them, an elderly woman with cancer who gets treated at Swedish, tried to yell out a question to Pelosi she was dragged from the area and made to sign a statement from the police promising to never return to Swedish! So the lesson is, don't try to ask a democratically elected official an uncomfortable question or the police might ban you from the hospital where you receive treatment for your cancer. Hopenchange!

Another protester that has press credentials was let into the room and he has footage here. He says:
A reporter from KOMO4TV NEWS asked Pelosi why people will be faced with a $250k fine or go to jail for refusing to buy health insurance. She failed to answer and he asked it again and the same results. I later asked him about it and he said it was a fair question and deserved an answer. Simply amazing, these elite politicians are pure snakes. Looks like KOMO was the only guys to come out to our protest and shoot footage.

I haven't watched the footage yet, but I will later today.

So, to everyone who did their very best to either spread the word or get there, THANK YOU!

What do I always say? When we show up, we win.

letters to a young activist

I am currently reading a book called "letters to a young activist" by Todd Gitlin. It is one of many books in a series called The Art of Mentoring. Todd Gitlin is one of the founding fathers of "the New Left," and was the President of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS). It is fascinating to read for a variety of reasons. One reason is my interest in learning about the philosophies behind ideologies I oppose, like collectivism. Another reason is that I am searching for tips. This man was part of quite a few successful movements and I believe I can learn from him.

Two ideas stand out to me thus far.

The first is his effort to inspire young activists to stay strong in the face of adversity, and to remain hopeful and committed. I think this kind of motivation could apply to anyone pursuing any goal, but it is especially relevant to those of us that seek to affect the direction of public policy, and ultimately the direction of society, i.e. the future. He reminds the young activist to find joy in their work.
In other words, when you act politically, act playfully too - not out of sheer contrariness but out of free delight. Duty requires reason - because you don't want your action to interfere with your goals - but duty is not condemned to bleakness. Duty leaves room for joyful initiative. Just because you let the dark side of the world into your nervous system doesn't mean that you have to surrender to gloom, which in any case is never as justified as it thinks. Let the poseurs sneer at the activists, calling them humorless while wearing humorless smirks - they don't know what they're missing.

I cannot think of a better bit of advice to give to Tea Partiers around the nation. Let people call you a tea bagger. Who cares? I certainly don't. Let the detractors roll around in their pig pens of overtly biased analysis and cynical, childish commentary. Gitlin is right, you do not need to surrender to gloom, ever. Take pride in your efforts to have an effect on society, and dammit, have fun while you are doing it.

Strength and joy can combat sneers and ignorant derisiveness any day of the week.

Well done to everyone who has fought so hard against the 2,000+ page monster of a bill, knowing that the bill does not contain "reform," but instead contains payoffs and paybacks and transformational policies that only very few desire.

There is still hope, so don't worry.

I'll discuss the second main idea tomorrow.

From Tea Party Patriots:

Dear Fellow Tea Party Patriots,

Thank you for your generous monetary donations this past week. We have raised over half of the funds for the Farmer Relief and Freedom Relay. That is enough to launch us. Once the checks are in, we may still send one more fund raising email out next week.

In the meantime, this maybe the craziest email you have ever received. The work we did around the country and in DC yesterday was powerful and instrumental. There were over 50,000 of you in DC in less than a week's notice. The lines outside the Congressional Office Buildings to pass through security were at or near historic levels.

The votes in favor of health care reform are fewer today than they were when we woke up yesterday morning. We are making a difference. But it still may not be enough yet.

Congressman King and Congresswoman Michele Bachmann called me this afternoon to specifically make a plea to you, the Tea Party Patriots. The Congressmen are concerned that we hit a crescendo and they want to make sure that our efforts were not in vain. We all know how much is at stake.

So, here is what these 2 Congressmen are asking Tea Party Patriots who are within driving distance of DC to do: come back tomorrow, Saturday, November 7 at 1:00 pm. Yes, I am as exhausted as you. I just got back to Atlanta and am now going to be back in DC tomorrow. Yes, I wonder why they did not just call this morning so I could stop those of you who were in DC from California, Illinois and other places and you could stay one more night.

Here is the plan and is going to sound crazy. The plan is for us to literally surround the Capitol and to make a lot of noise doing it. A LOT OF NOISE. So, bring your musical instruments, trumpets, boom boxes, snare drums, cymbals, noise makers, bag pipes, boat horns and even your crying babies. We are going to make sure they hear us NOW!!!! You I'm only joking about the crying babies. The longer we can postpone the vote on health care, the better chance we have of stopping the government from taking it over.

If there is anyway for you to drive or fly to DC and be there at 1:00 eastern, please reply to to let me know. If you can be there within a 4 - 6 hour drive or a 1 - 2 hour flight, consider making this sacrifice one more time.

Our Founding Fathers pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. They made it possible for us to make our voices heard with the gift they left to us: the Constitution. Many, many of us have sacrificed time out of our lives, our fortunes whether large or small, and are promising our sacred honor to protect the Constitution and our way of government for future generations. As much as I want to tell these two Congressmen they are crazy to ask us to do this, I realize that Tea Party Patriots has been fighting this issue since May. If it comes down to this scheduled vote tomorrow night and the health care bill passes the House by 8 or less votes and I had not made this plea to you, I will always wonder "what if?"

We are so close to turning the tide in the House of Representatives. Please join me again tomorrow as we make ourselves heard louder and louder and louder with our voices and instruments and other noise makers.

If you cannot be there (and we truly understand if you cannot), here is what you can do:
  • Call the Congressmen listed below in your state and tell them to vote no. Tell them a vote yes on this bill will be viewed as betrayal to the Constitution.
  • Forward this email to anyone you know who might be able to drive or fly to DC tomorrow or who will be willing to make phone calls
  • Listen live on Tea Party Patriots Blog Talk Radio

Your Fellow Patriot,
Jenny Beth Martin
Tea Party Patriots, National Coordinator

P.S. Many of you have expressed concern because the event in DC yesterday turned into a partisan love fest. Know that yesterday's event was a press conference. Tea Party Patriots as an organization was not invited to join this press conference specifically. Tea Party Patriots did not plan the event. We did not invite ourselves to be on the agenda.

When you the grassroots told us you were going, we made sure to be there to assist you in contacting your Congressmen and navigating the House Office Buildings.

I have a personal, verbal commitment from both Congressman King and Congresswoman Bachmann that it will not be that way tomorrow. The next few days, our focus must be health care. We will address partisan politics in the coming weeks after dealing with health care. Be assured this is your movement. The other National Coordinators and I will do all we can to protect your movement for you. We will ensure that Tea Party Patriots' agenda stays focused on the core principles that unified us on April 15th, July 4th, July 17th, in August, and on September 12. The are fiscal responsibility, Constitutionally limited government, and free markets.

American citizens living abroad forced to buy health insurance or pay the fine under Pelosi's plan - Updated

Scroll for updates.

My friend, who is a Fulbright Scholar conducting research in Taiwan, informed me today that as currently written, the individual mandates in HR 3962 apply to American citizens living abroad. For my friend, this means that although he is covered by Taiwan's national health insurance, he will be forced to purchase an American "qualified" plan or pay the 2.5% tax. This is yet another disturbing element of the totally delusional Nancy Pelosi and her kamikazi-like "leadership." God help us all.

My friend's letter is below.

I read through H.R. 3962, looking for an answer to this question, and I go into all the details about the text of the legislation at the end of this email. But here's the executive summary:

1. In the process of reading this legislation, I noticed references to additional legislation in section 501 (d)(2)(A) and 501 (d)(2)(B) that were incomplete (currently located around page 301 of the bill). I've only looked at a few pages of the bill. My concern is that this bill is still incomplete, and it would be extremely prudent for voting to be delayed until after everyone has had time to finish writing it, not to mention allowing time for you and your colleagues to read through the whole piece of legislation on Rep. McDermott's behalf.

2. There are currently about 50,000 Americans living in Taiwan alone, and hundreds of thousands of Americans study abroad every year. I'm concerned that under H.R. 3962, a substantial number of American citizens living abroad are going to find themselves forced to pay for medical coverage that they neither need nor want. While the legislation allows the Health Secretary to consider individual cases, in practice this won't happen giving such a high volume of potential petitions. My concern, therefore, is that a substantial number of middle-class Americans who may temporarily go abroad to work would have an incentive not to return to the United States under this legislation, in order to avoid the tax (see the specific sections of the bill and tax code below for why I think this is so.)

It might therefore make sense to either lower the required amount of time to live abroad before an American is considered having "acceptable coverage", or lower the tax for Americans living abroad. My concern is that anything else is going to create economic incentives for some of our best people to take their talent abroad, and that's not good for our economy, especially now.

So if I could make a specific suggestion for an amendment to H.R. 3962, I would ask that the tax for lack of "acceptable coverage" be waived for Americans living abroad for more than 60 days. This would eliminate those perverse economic incentives, while still making it unlikely that people would try to evade the tax by leaving the country (traveling for two months is costly!). I say "60 days" because I recall that many study-abroad programs are for one semester or for ten to twelve weeks during the summer. The bottom line: We don't want to force talent away from our shores.

I sincerely hope that Rep. McDermott could raise some of these issues during the debate this week.

Here's my reading of H.R. 3962 and the law it references:

Division A, Subtitle IV, Subtitle A, section 401 covers "Individual Responsibility," and related to this is Title V, Part I, Subpart A, section 501 which covers a "Tax on individuals without acceptable health care coverage."

(Section 401 simply says to look to Section 501 for language for an amendment to Section 59B of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986.)

Section 501 introduces language for that amendment, and I think that's where we have to look to answer the question about Americans living abroad. Part (c)(3) of that section covers "Americans Living Abroad," and refers me to section 911(D) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 and says that I'm considered having "acceptable coverage" if I qualify under either of the two definitions in subparagraphs (A) and (B) of section 1.

So far, so good. Here's the text from that tax code which I pulled off Cornell University's Web site:

"(d) Definitions and special rules
For purposes of this section—
(1) Qualified individual
The term “qualified individual” means an individual whose tax home is in a foreign country and who is—
(A) a citizen of the United States and establishes to the satisfaction of the Secretary that he has been a bona fide resident of a foreign country or countries for an uninterrupted period which includes an entire taxable year, or
(B) a citizen or resident of the United States and who, during any period of 12 consecutive months, is present in a foreign country or countries during at least 330 full days in such period."

The IRS definition of "tax home" is pretty clear (IRS Publication 17). Basically just about anyone who goes abroad to live or work has their tax home abroad.

So the answer to my question is now clear: as a Fulbright researcher in Taiwan for nine months and covered under Taiwan's National Health Insurance plan, under H.R. 3962 I would be required to have "acceptable coverage" in the United States or pay a tax of 2.5% of my income, because my tax home is in Taiwan but I am not living there for more than 330 consecutive days. There's therefore an incentive for me to extend my stay for a few more months.

There's one possibility, however: subpart (d) of section 501 of H.R. 3962 defines "acceptable coverage" and gives an option for "other coverage" in subparagraph (H): "Such other health benefits coverage as the Health Secretary, in coordination with the Health Choices Commissioner, recognizes for purposes of this subsection." I can't imagine that getting forced for very many special cases, however -- it would require too much overhead.

Update: Another blogger - an American citizen living abroad - has posted on this issue as well, here and here.

Money Quote of the Day

"Our government has grown from just over $120 billion budget in the mid 1960 to nearly $3.7 trillion today. We transfer well over $1 trillion dollars a year in redistributive policies to “fight poverty” – yet despite spending untold trillions – our poverty rate has remained nearly constant over those 40 years at 14%.

In other words, government never so much solves our problems as much as it institutionalizes them. In the case of poverty, it does so by providing nearly countless benefits to those without work and then keeps them on the dole by taking away their benefits if their private income rises. Faced with a choice of “free” benefits or earned income, government induces millions to remain dependant."

One interesting question that Jim Geraghty at National Review brings up is, will these Democrats that know they stand to lose in the next election go ahead and make the plunge anyway? Will they vote for Pelosi's bill knowing that if they do, conservatives will kick them out, and if they don't, then liberals and conservatives will kick them out?

This is what I am afraid of... so, when you call these Blue Dogs, tell them that if they vote no, that you will support them next year. Tell them to take a stand. I don't mind a conservative Democrat in the house - if they behave like one. Tell them to act like the conservative Democrats they purported to be, and they'll be able to count on conservative support next year.
